2. SALINAS DE FUENCALIENTE, LA PALMA

A nice excursion to the home of the finest sea salt: the Salinas de Fuencaliente were founded in 1967 and nowadays they still extract fine sea salt from the Atlantic Ocean. The sea water evaporates with the heat of the sun and as a result little sparkling mountains of salt are formed. The Salinas de Fuencaliente were also declared “Sitio de Interés Científico” (Site of Scientific Interest), because it is a resting place for many migratory birds. Nature gives its visitors a marvellous spectacle: the blue Atlantic Ocean, the black volcanic rocks and the sparkling white sea salt form a beautiful colour combination. There is also a restaurant, where you can taste fish and other traditional Canarian dishes, learn more about the extraction of the sea salt and buy the exquisite fleur de sel (flor de sal). Fleur de sel is scraped by hand and can only be obtained when the temperatures are high and a delicate salt layer forms on top of the water. The perfect excursion for nature lovers and gourmets!
