Halloween with its pumpkins, costumes and so on has become very popular among the population of the Canary Islands. But also before that they had their own traditional celebration the night before All Saints’ Day (the 31st October) – the “Fiesta de los Finados”. Children went from house to house asking for “santos” (“saints”, referring to dried fruits). In the evening the family would come together, eat roasted chestnuts, sweets called “huesos de santo” (“Bones of The Saints”), drink anise and honey rum and share anectdotes about dead members of the family. At night there would be dance and music around the town. Nowadays the tradition of the “Finados” is still alive in a few towns on Tenerife and Gran Canaria, like San Mateo, Santa Brígida, Vega de San Mateo and Vegeta.

Pero antes los canarios tenían su propia fiesta popular, celebrada la noche antes del Día de Todos los Santos (el 31 de octubre) – la Fiesta de los Finados. Los niños iban de casa a casa pidiendo santos (refiriéndos a frutos secos y otras golosinas). Por la tarde las familias se reunían para comer castañas asadas, los dulces huesos de santos, beber anís y ron miel y contar anécdotas sobre los miebros de la familia que ya habían muerto. Por la noche había música y bailes en los pueblos. Hoy en día la tradición de los “Finaos” se mantiene viva sobre todo en algunos pueblos de Tenerife y Gran Canaria, como San Mateo, Santa Brígida, Vega de San Mateo y Vegeta.
Halloween mit seinen Kürbisköpfen, Kostümen und so weiter ist inzwischen sehr beliebt auf den Kanarischen Inseln. Aber auch vorher hatten die Bewohner der Kanaren ihr eigenes traditionelles Fest, das an dem Tag vor Allerheiligen (am 31. Oktober) stattfand – die “Fiesta de los Finados”. Die Kinder liefen von Haus zu Haus und baten um “santos” (“Heilige”, hiermit waren Nüsse gemeint). Am Nachmittag kam die ganze Familie zusammen um geröstete Kastanien und die Süßigkeit “Huesos de Santos” (“Knochen der Heiligen”) zu essen, Anis und Honigrum zu trinken und Anekdoten über die verstorbenen Familienmitglieder zu erzählen. Nachts gab es Tanz und Musik in den Dörfern. Heuzutage werden die “Finados” noch in einigen Dörfern auf Teneriffa und Gran Canaria gefeiert, zum Beispiel in San Mateo, Santa Brígida, Vega de San Mateo und Vegeta.

ARE YOU SEARCHING FOR SOME SPOOKY PLACES?
Villa Winter and the wrack of the SS America, Fuerteventura
The Canary Islands offer beautiful sceneries: splendid beaches, lush vegetation and enigmatic volcanic landscapes. But if you are searching for spooky places and unsolved mysteries, the islands also have something to offer! Two spooky highlights are located on Fuerteventura: the enigmatic Villa Winter and the abandoned wreck of the SS America. Villa Winter is located in a mainly unhabitated area near Cofete and was named after the German engineer Gustav Winter. There are many conspiracy theories surrounding this mansion – was it a Nazi military base or a meeting point for Nazi generals escaping to South America after the Second World War? We will probably never find out! The second spooky place on Fuerteventura is the former SS America, also known as “Barco Fantasma” (“ghost ship”). The ship had a turbulent story (from army ship during World War II to glamorous cruiser) and finally found its final resting place next to the coast of Fuerteventura. Read more in our previous post!

Pero si buscas un lugar realmente aterrador, que te ponga los pelos de punta este Halloween, tendrás que buscar un largo rato. Finalmente podrás encontrar dos lugares misteriosos en Fuerteventura: la Villa Winter y los restos del crucero SS America. Villa Winter se encuentra en una zona remota y practicamente inhabitada en las cercanías de Cofete y debe su nombre al ingeniero alemán Gustav Winter. Hay muchas teorías conspirativas que rodean esta mansión – ¿fue una base militar de los nazis o un punto estratégico para los nazis que escaparon a Sudamérica después del final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial? ¡Probablemente nunca lo sabremos con seguridad! El segundo lugar misteriososo en Fuerteventura es el pecio del SS America, también conocido como “Barco Fantasma”. El barco tuvo una historia turbulenta (barco militar durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, glamuroso crucero de lujo, etc.) y finalmente encontró su destino final frente a la costa de Fuerteventura.

Das Schiff hatte eine turbulente Geschichte (es war ein Kriegsschiff während des Zweiten Weltkriegs und durchquerte die Ozeane unter anderem auch als glamuröser Luxusliner) bis es seine Ruhestätte an der Küste von Fuerteventura fand.
THE ISLAND THAT APPEARS AND DISAPPEARS
Have you heard about the legend of San Borondón?
It is the legend about an eight island, a ghost island that appears and disappears. On ancient maps you can find an eight Canary Island, often thought to be located in the west of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. It has never been proved that this island really exists, but there are many people who claim to have to seen the island from the coast of another island or from the top of the Teide on Tenerife. There are also photos and many decades ago sailors wrote in their journals that they had visited this island. But does it really exist? Probably not (it is said that it may be a visual effect, an accumulation of clouds or a sunlight reflection), but it is a wonderful legend for everyone who likes a little bit of mystery!

Es la leyenda de una octava isla, una isla fantasma que aparece y desaparece. En algunos mapas antiguos puedes encontrar una octava isla canaria, muchas veces localizada al oeste de La Palma, La Gomera y El Hierro. Nunca se ha podido demostrar que esta isla realmente existe, pero hay bastantes personas que dicen haber visto esta isla desde la costa de otra isla o desde el pico del Teide. También hay fotos y en el pasado había navegantes que incluso narraban en sus diarios haber visitado esta isla. ¿Realmente existe? Lo más probable es que no (se dice que sus avistamientos se deben a un efecto visual, a la acumulación de nubes o al reflejo de la luz solar), ¡pero es una leyenda maravillosa para los amantes de los misterios!

Auf alten Karten kann man manchmal eine achte kanarische Insel finden, oft wird diese im Westen von La Palma, La Gomera und El Hierro markiert. Es wurde nie bewiesen, dass diese Insel wirklich existiert, aber es gibt viele Leute die behaupten die Insel von der Küste einer anderen Insel oder von dem Gipfel des Teide auf Teneriffa aus gesehen zu haben. Es gibt sogar Fotos und in der Vergangenheit schrieben Seefahrer in ihren Berichten, sie hätten diese Insel sogar besucht. Aber gibt es sie wirklich? Wahrscheinlich nicht (einige Erklärungsversuche weisen auf visuelle Effekte, eine Akkumulation von Wolken oder die Spiegelung des Sonnenlichts hin), aber es ist trotzdem eine wunderbare Legende für alle die sich von Geheimnissen begeistern lassen!
