Close to the beach “Playa de Garcey” on the west coast of Fuerteventura there is located the wreck of the “American Star”. It was once a luxury cruise ship, but today it is almost completely submerged in the sea. The turbulent history of the luxury liner begins in 1939 when the ship was baptized by the First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt on the name of SS America. During World War II the ship was used by the army and it got a new name: USS West Point. Despite many attacks and countless trips across the seas, the ship survived the war unscathed. After World War II, the glamorous interiors were restored and the ship experienced its heyday as a cruise ship. Over the years, the ship was renamed several times and among other things it was used as a way of transport between Australia and New Zealand.
But in the 70s the ship was slowly getting old and losing its former charm. In the 90s the SS America was bought to make it a luxury hotel in Thailand. A tugboat should bring the ship to Thailand, but on the way, near the Canary Islands, the convoy got into a violent storm and the connection to the “American Star” was destroyed. Despite many attempts, the ship could not be connected to the tugboat again and the crew had to be rescued by helicopter. Within 48 hours, the ship broke in two parts and the rear part sank near the coast of Fuerteventura. During the next years the ship became an attraction, but it also had its dangers as some visitors died when exploring the ship. This resulted in a new name for the “American Star”: el “Barco Fantasma”, the “ghost ship”. In 2007 the front part of the ship also sank and nowadays you can almost see nothing of the former “Star”. Nahe dem Strand “Playa de Garcey” an der Westküste von Fuerteventura befindet sich das Wrack des “American Star”. Einst war es ein luxuriöses Kreuzfahrtschiff, doch heute ist es fast vollständig im Meer versunken – nur noch ein kleines Stück des Schiffes ragt aus dem Wasser hervor. Die bewegte Geschichte des Luxusliners beginnt 1939 als das Schiff von der First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt auf den Namen SS America getauft wird. Im zweiten Weltkrieg wird das Schiff von der Armee genutzt und bekommt einen grauen Anstrich und einen neuen Namen: USS Westpoint. Trotz vieler Angriffe und unzähligen Fahrten über die Weltmeere überlebt das Schiff den Krieg unversehrt. Nach dem Weltkrieg wird die glamouröse Einrichtung des Schiffes wiederhergestellt und es erlebt seine Blütezeit als Kreuzfahrtschiff. Im Laufe der Jahre wird das Schiff mehrmals umbennant und fungiert unter anderem als Transportmittel zwischen Australien und Neuseeland.
Doch in den 70er Jahren kommt das Schiff langsam in die Jahre und verliert seinen einstigen Flair. In den 90er Jahren wird die SS America gekauft um aus ihr ein Luxushotel in Thailand zu machen. Ein ukrainischer Schlepper soll das Schiff bis nach Thailand bringen, doch unterwegs, in der Nähe der Kanarischen Inseln, gerät der Konvoi in einen heftigen Sturm und verliert die Verbindung zu dem “American Star”. Trotz vieler Versuche kann das Schiff nicht mehr mit dem Schlepper verbunden werden und die Crew muss per Hubschrauber gerettet werden. Innerhalb von 48 Stunden zerbricht das Schiff in zwei Teile und der hintere Teil versinkt vor der Küste von Fuerteventura. Während der nächsten Jahre entwickelt sich das Schiff zu einer Attraktion, doch es birgt auch seine Gefahren, denn einige Neugierige kommen bei Expeditionen auf dem Schiff um. So erlangt der “American Star” einen neuen Namen unter den Inselbewohnern, el “Barco Fantasma”, das “Geisterschiff”. Im Jahr 2007 versinkt auch der vordere Teil des Schiffes im Meer und heutzutage kann man fast nichts mehr von dem einstigen “Star” sehen. Cerca de la Playa de Garcey en la costa oeste de Fuerteventura tuvo lugar el naufragio del “American Star”. Era una vez un crucero de lujo, pero hoy en día está casi completamente sumergido en el mar – sólo un pequeño pedazo de la nave sobresale del agua. La turbulenta historia del transatlántico de lujo comienza en 1939 cuando la nave fue bautizada por la Primera Dama Eleanor Roosevelt bajo el nombre de SS America. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la nave fue utilizada por el ejército y se pintó de gris y recibió un nuevo nombre: USS West Point. A pesar de muchos ataques e innumerables viajes, la nave sobrevivió a la guerra. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los interiores elegantes se restauraron y el SS America experimentó su apogeo como crucero de lujo. Con los años, el buque cambió de nombre varias veces y sirvió entre otras cosas como medio de transporte entre Australia y Nueva Zelanda.
Pero en los años 70 la nave empezó a deteriorarse y a perder su antiguo encanto. En los años 90 el SS America fue comprado para convertirlo en un hotel de lujo en Tailandia. Un cascarón ucraniano debía llevar el barco a Tailandia, pero en el camino, cerca de las Islas Canarias, el convoy fue sorprendido por una violenta tormenta y se rompió la conexión con el “American Star”. A pesar de muchos intentos, el buque no se pudo conectar de nuevo con el cascarón y el equipo tuvo que ser rescatado en helicóptero. En 48 horas, el buque se rompió en dos partes y la parte trasera se hundió frente a la costa de Fuerteventura. Durante los próximos años, la nave se convirtió en una atracción, pero una atración peligrosa, ya que murieron algunas personas en excursiones en el barco. Ese fue el origen para un nuevo nombre del “American Star”, que fue llamado “Barco Fantasma” por los isleños.
